Nissan Rogue Transmission is a CVT Transmission Type
The Nissan Rogue transmission is a CVT transmission, and it differs from the more common planetary gear type. This type of transmission, which comes in the Nissan Rogue as well as many other cars and SUVs, uses 2 dynamically adjustable pulleys which are coupled via a special drive belt comprised of many steel links. You can also find the CVT transmission in the Nissan Altima and the Nissan Murano. These vehicles are all notorious for failure at relatively low mileage. Some Nissan Maxima models also have a CVT transmission.
Nissan Rogue Remanufactured Transmission
Nissan Rogue transmission problems include failure of the stepper motor, often necessitating a remanufactured transmission or a rebuilt transmission. In the past, Nissan did not make internal transmission parts available, thus producing a rebuilt CVT or a remanufactured CVT was problematic. For a while, some companies sold transmissions as remanufactured, but those units did not typically last very long because crucial parts were not available. Because of this issue, we choose to install only new Nissan Rogue transmissions as opposed to a Rogue remanufactured transmission.

A common problem with the Nissan Murano transmission is a failure of the stepper motor, usually requiring a remanufactured transmission as a replacement. In the past, the manufacturer did not make replacement parts available for this transmission, so producing a rebuilt CVT or a remanufactured CVT was difficult. At the time, many companies were selling transmissions as remanufactured, but those units did not usually last very long, because crucial parts were not available. For this reason, we choose to install only new Nissan transmissions, and some subsequent remanufactured Nissan transmissions, as some replacement units have been phased out by the manufacturer.

Nissan Altima Transmission Service and Repair in Maryland
We have found that in Maryland, Nissan Altima transmissions with a V6 engine may start having problems in as little as 70,000 miles. The transmission type is the AW55-50SN, manufactured by Aisin. Installation of this 5-speed automatic transmission into the Altima began in 2004, with earlier years having the 4 speed RE4F04A unit. Careful diagnosis is important on these transmissions because remanufactured replacement is not generally required in the Maryland area. It should be noted that a new transmission is not available from the Nissan dealer and that all transmissions are either overhauled or rebuilt.
Altima Transmission Valve Body Problems for Maryland
Most transmission issues associated with the Nissan Altima are caused by a worn valve body, which controls the flow of transmission fluid pressure. Problems began as the internal valves wear out the valve body bores over time, which causes too much of the fluid pressure to move around the valves. An accurate way to confirm the problem is that it usually only happens as the car warms up. Here in Maryland, Nissan Altima transmissions can dissipate much heat in the winter, so the problem may not be as severe, or take longer to appear while driving. The ability to drive the car when both cold and hot is quite helpful in confirming a transmission valve body problem. If the valve body is determined to be the issue, the best solution is to replace it with a new factory unit, which can be purchased at the Nissan dealer. There are remanufactured valve bodies available, but we have found these to be problematic, and only purchase new units directly from Nissan dealerships in Maryland.
Altima Transmission Solenoid Problems in Maryland
New valve bodies also include all-new electronic shift solenoids, an added bonus. Solenoids do not often fail on the Nissan Altima transmissions we rebuild in Maryland, but good if they are replaced. If a shifting problem persists after the valve body has been installed, it is nice to be able to rule out the solenoids as the cause. Please read over our other Nissan page, as it contains relevant information about this transmission, which is also used in the Maxima and Quest. Problems described there are the same as those for the Altima transmission, including the solenoid and valve body troubles.
Nissan Maxima and Quest Automatic Transmission Service and Repair
Automatic transmissions in the Nissan Maxima, Quest and Altima for 2004 and later models can begin showing problems in as few as 45,000 miles. The specific cars affected have the 5-speed automatic transmission, the AW55-50SN. The unreliability of this transmission lies in stark contrast to its predecessor, the RE4F04A, a 4-speed automatic transmission. Introduced in 1992 and installed in the Maxima, Quest, and Altima with DOHC engines, this transmission has been much more dependable over the years.
Maxima and Quest Transmission Valve Body
Most of the problems within the 5-speed automatics stem from the Valve Body, the hydraulic control mechanism within the transmission. Symptoms surface when its barrel-shaped spool valves wear out their bores over time, allowing internal pressure losses in the hydraulic circuits. The good news is that, in most cases, replacing the Valve Body corrects the transmission problem, and costs much less than a rebuilt or remanufactured transmission. The new Valve Body should allow the transmission to operate for at least as long as the original period. We install a special synthetic fluid that slows the wear rate on the new Valve Body, so it should actually last longer than the first time around. In addition, we only install dealer OEM valve bodies as the remanufactured units that are available are known to have common issues.
New Nissan Valve Body and Solenoids
When servicing a Maxima or Quest we only install a brand new valve body, which is an original equipment manufacturers (OEM) part and comes from the Nissan Dealership. Although the solenoids rarely fail on this type of transmission, the new Valve Body includes the benefit of all new electronic solenoids. There are times when a Valve Body does not correct all of the problems. This usually happens when the customer has not brought the car in for transmission service or repair soon enough. If we install a Valve Body into your vehicle, and the transmission problem reoccurs within 6 months of driving, we apply the entire amount originally spent towards an overhaul or transmission replacement, although most Nissan dealerships and transmission repair shop probably won’t make this offer. This ensures that you are not wasting your money by replacing the valve body.
Nissan Pathfinder and Xterra Transmission
Internal Computer Control Modules
The computerized transmission controller is located inside the Nissan Pathfinder and Nissan Xterra transmission, attached to the valve body. Transmissions such as those in the Nissan Pathfinder are not the only units that house the transmission computer within it; other companies that manufacture units with this configuration include BMW and Mercedes. However, almost all other cars, trucks, and SUVs are designed with the computer located outside of the transmission, and in many cases, it is integrated into the engine computer controller system.
Automatic Transmission High Current and Low Current Computer Electrical Systems
A computerized automatic transmission uses both low current and high current systems. The low current systems control the computer microprocessor itself, while the high current systems control the shift and pressure solenoids. If the computer controller is located outside of the automatic transmission, only high current electronics are located within the transmission. If the controller is located on the inside, then low current electronics are located on the inside as well.
Radiator Leak Causes Transmission Problems on Nissan Pathfinder, Xterra, and Armada
These categorical differences play a big role in the high failure rate of Nissan trucks and SUVs, specifically in the Pathfinder, Xterra, and Armada with the RE5R05A unit. This is because the transmission cooler heat exchanger located inside of the radiator often develops a leak. The radiator leak problem is internal and allows the engine radiator fluid, or water-based coolant, to mix with the automatic transmission fluid. On most automatic transmissions, transmission fluid that is contaminated with water-based radiator coolant does not affect the high current electronic solenoid systems.
Valve Body Damaged by Radiator Coolant Water Leak Must Be Replaced on Nissan Transmissions
For most trucks and SUVs, fixing the radiator problem and replacing the transmission fluid might correct this problem. However, on the Nissan Pathfinder and Xterra and other models that use the RE5R05A transmission, the engine coolant water contamination can short-circuit the low current electronic computer located on the valve body. We have found that fixing the radiator and replacing the contaminated fluid with fresh fluid does not alleviate the problem, as the transmission computer has been permanently damaged. The only way to fix a damaged transmission computer is to replace it with a new one, and they are only available from Nissan as part of a new valve body assembly. We also recommend bypassing the radiator with an external transmission cooler to prevent this from happening again as replacing the radiator issue is likely to happen again.
